More than 60 companies and individuals have donated more than $50,000 to help employees of media companies that were impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

The storm, which destroyed homes and businesses, brought more than 50 inches of rain to parts of Houston, greatly impacted employees of media companies and their families. In Harvey’s path were seven Local Media Association member organizations whose staffs provided incredible journalism during the storm and continue to today as the long cleanup process starts.

A fund to help those employees was established a week ago and to date has raised $50,345. This week, the Facebook Journalism Project alone donated $25,000. A handful of other top donors also gave. They include:

• $5,000: Scripps Howard Foundation
• $2,000: Swift Communications
• $1,000: News Media Alliance, The Buffalo News, Legacy.com, Observer Media Group, Chris Hendricks and the Local Media Association.

“We are just thrilled that so many companies and individuals gave so generously,” said LMA President Nancy Lane. “It means so much for the employees of these media companies who have worked so incredibly hard during this difficult time as their homes were destroyed and their personal possessions were lost. The generosity of our members and the industry is overwhelming.”

The funds will be divided equally among these seven media organization members: Community Impact, Houston Defender, KRIS/Cordillera, KAVU/SAGA, KPRC/Graham Media Group, Sherman Company / American Press and Victoria Advocate.
