McClatchy’s Andrew Pergam has been named the Local Media Association’s Digital Innovator of the Year for his work growing the company’s video business.

The award, which will be presented at LMA’s May 1-2 Digital Revenue Summit in Chicago, recognizes a digital media executive who is pioneering new concepts, experimenting in new and creative ways and delivering impactful results for their company.

Pergam, who is Vice President, Video and New Ventures at McClatchy, leads The Video Lab, McClatchy’s award-winning video operation, the company’s corporate and business development efforts and the management of its venture investment portfolio.

“It was genuinely surprising — and thrilling — to hear that I was selected for this honor,” he said.  “I share this award with a trusted team of collaborators I’m honored to call colleagues and friends. We strive every day to facilitate meaningful work that advances McClatchy’s mission and our industry’s impact. There’s much more work ahead of us and I can’t wait to keep pressing forward.”

Pergam joined McClatchy in 2014 as Head of Video to develop a comprehensive video initiative across McClatchy’s 29 markets and 14 states. The Video Lab now encompasses a real-time desk, a team of regional editors, producers and video journalists, as well as The Creative Lab, a branded content studio, and an innovation team.

This spring, McClatchy will open the doors to a 10,000-square foot production facility in the company’s hometown of Sacramento, CA, dedicated to exploring new forms of storytelling on emerging platforms.

“We are thrilled to recognize Andy and his incredible efforts in building McClatchy’s video business,” said Nancy Lane, President of LMA. “He’s clearly transforming their video content, production and revenue.”

Pergam has served on boards of Matter and the Local Media Consortium, and works closely to advise a number of other media startups and entrepreneurs. He is also co-founder of Spark Camp, an event series that gathers leaders in media, technology and other industries for a series of important and intimate conversations throughout the year.  Prior to joining McClatchy, he was a Senior Editor and the Director of Video at The Washington Post, leading long-term strategy and overseeing day-to-day operations.
