There’s never a bad time to visit New York City, but April in New York is special. It was especially wonderful to gather with colleagues and cohorts from across the Local Media Association ecosystem for our annual LMA Summit.

While it was a private event, we wanted to share some of it with you through posts and pictures given to us from their LinkedIn pages. We’ll also have some learnings and takeaways soon.

What a delight to gather in person at Google in NYC this week to launch our new state cohorts of the Local Media Association Lab for Journalism Funding! These 27 newsrooms from Illinois and New Mexico – who’ll be joined by 19 California newsrooms – got to hear from amazing local news thought leaders including Judi Terzotis, Jennifer Preston and Liz White Notarangelo; and begin their work on developing journalism projects to fund through philanthropy; as well as participate in ‘Shark Tank’ practice pitches!

Thanks to all the newsrooms, our amazing team of coaches including Joanne Heyman, Samantha Johnston, Rashad Mahmood, Sam Moody, Mackenzie Warren and Joaquin Alvarado; our LMA team including Liz and Nina Joss, along with Nancy Lane Jay Small, Julia Campbell, and Lindsey Estes. Thanks also to our state partners New Mexico Local News Fund and Medill Local News Initiative.

And a huge thanks to our hosts at Google News Initiative for making this event — and our lab — possible, including Lauren Ashcraft and Jennifer MacGregor Will, and Google leaders Miki Toliver King, Chrissy Towle and Chris Jansen.

What a week in NYC with our LMA team and a record number of cohort meetings at one time! Our News is Out collaborative had a day of strategic planning, followed by a very special reception at the Stonewall Monument hosted by The Philadelphia Gay News Founder and Stonewall activist Mark Segal. Also participating in another cohort of ours on fundraising, former GateHouse colleagues Bill Church and Patrick Dorsey were there in their new roles at Santa Fe New Mexican. We also spent an afternoon with the Google News Initiative team. It was wonderful to see everyone in person.

Just returned from an incredible The Branded Content Project Sales Bootcamp in New York, hosted by Local Media Association with support from Google. I attended on behalf of URL Media and our partners, and it was hands-down one of the most valuable trainings I’ve experienced lately.

The bootcamp focused on empowering local publishers to grow revenue and build stronger advertiser relationships through branded content. It was packed with actionable strategies that I’ll be bringing back to our team and partners.

Two standout takeaways:

1. The Power of Referrals: Leveraging connections from current advertisers and well-connected prospects can be a game-changer.

2. Community Engagement: Getting out there and speaking as a subject matter expert on the state of local news can significantly boost credibility and trust.

Branded content is a powerful tool for publishers supporting local and national businesses in telling their stories while also uplifting original reporting.

Big thanks to Julia Campbell, Shannon Kinney, Peter Lamb, and LMA for fostering such a dynamic space for learning and collaboration. Excited to put these insights into action!

I just wrapped up a few inspiring days at Google HQ with hundreds of fellow media pros from across the country — all brought together by the Local Media Association to learn, share, and grow.

Our team at Trib Total Media was selected for a special content marketing cohort led by the incredible Shannon Kinney and Peter Lamb — two mentors whose insight and energy are second to none.

Over the next 11 weeks, we’ll be diving into strategies to help our clients grow through smarter, more engaging content — whether it’s:

-> Native advertising (aka sponsored content & branded content)
-> Social media management
-> Video creation
-> Contests & Quizzes
-> Infographics
-> Or whatever format tells their story best

Huge thanks to the Local Media Association and Google for making this possible — and to Shannon and Peter for setting the tone for an amazing cohort. Looking forward to the weeks ahead — learning, experimenting, and building better content marketing solutions for our clients.
