On a recent Keep It Local podcast, Local Media Association co-CEO Liz White Notarangelo shared powerful, real-world lessons on what it really takes to build community and create lasting transformation in local journalism.
Here’s what stood out — and what every newsroom should take to heart:
1. Trust is the foundation of transformation.
Before you chase new revenue models or tech trends, make sure your journalism is trusted, your brand is respected and your community relationships are strong. Innovation means nothing without integrity.
2. Build a culture of continuous change.
Your newsroom’s default setting should be evolution. Teach your team to expect change, not fear it. In Liz’s words: “Be relentlessly curious and open.”
3. Adopt a ‘succeed or fail fast’ mindset.
Not every experiment will work — and that’s OK. The faster you learn what’s effective, the faster you can grow. Just don’t cling to ideas that aren’t moving the mission forward.
4. Listening is your newsroom’s superpower.
Forget shiny tools for a moment. Advisory boards, focus groups and community check-ins might be the most effective strategies in your toolkit. Trust is built when people feel heard.
5. Strategic revenue must rest on credibility.
Whether you’re launching a branded content studio or seeking philanthropic dollars, your credibility is your currency. Liz made it clear: “These pillars only work hand-in-hand with trust.”
6. Create a “stop doing” list.
One of the most overlooked growth tactics is subtraction. What are you doing out of habit that no longer serves your strategy? Cut it. Refocus your time and energy.
7. Align every initiative to a growth pillar.
Before greenlighting a new project or campaign, ask: Does this align with our strategic pillars? If not, it may be a distraction — no matter how exciting it seems.
8. Invest in your local brand.
Your newsroom’s reputation in the community isn’t a side asset — it’s a core asset. A strong local brand makes audience growth, partnerships, and funding all easier to sustain.
9. Community is more than coverage.
To Liz, community means two-way relationships. Don’t just report on your community — invite them in. Be present, be transparent and be human.
10. Bring your team to LMA Fest 2025.
Liz closed with an invite to LMA Fest in Chicago, August 19–20, where the future of local media will be shaped through collaboration, AI strategy, philanthropy, and trust-first innovation.
