Newspaper publishers in the Knight x LMA BloomLab have played a crucial role in shaping and reflecting the African-American experience, providing a platform for news, information, and perspectives relevant to the Black community.
These Black media organizations have historically served as important sources of information, empowerment, and advocacy for the African-American community. While the landscape of new consumption has evolved with digital media, many of these publications continue to have a significant impact both in print and online. As digital media have grown, many of these publishers have made significant transformations in capturing digital revenue to augment their print solutions and, ultimately, have diversified their revenue sources.
I have worked with BloomLab participants to drive revenue growth by leveraging online platforms and strategies to monetize content, engage audiences and attract advertisers. Having delivered many sales training and consultation sessions with more to come, I offer five pieces of advice to help sales teams in 2024:
Have a deep understanding of the media landscape in your respective markets
Stay informed about market trends, emerging technologies and changes in consumer behavior in your respective markets. This understanding will help you anticipate shifts in the market and position your team for success.
Provide continuous training and invest in your people
Media sales professionals must receive ongoing training to stay current with the latest sales techniques. Invest in, and allow time for, regular training programs to keep your team’s skills sharp and aligned with industry best practices.
Set clear goals and metrics
Establish clear, measurable objectives for your sales team. Define key performance indicators (KPIs) that align with your organization’s overall business goals, and regularly assess and communicate progress toward those goals.
Encourage collaboration
Foster a collaborative environment that encourages healthy competition where team members can share insights, strategies, and successful approaches. This environment encourages open communication to enhance the collective knowledge and effectiveness of the entire team.
Celebrate success!
Recognize and celebrate individual and team achievements. Positive reinforcement not only boosts morale but also reinforces behaviors that contribute to overall success.
